Spotting Scopes

Spotting scopes are a highly useful tool that facilitates a clear vision of distant objects. A compact, high-power telescope, the spotting scope is optimised for use as a portable optical enhancement device. It is convenient for many outdoor activities such as birdwatching, skygazing and more. It is also used for hunting and target shooting as it helps spot and verifies shot placements. Apart from these applications, a spotting scope is quite helpful for tactical ranging and surveillance and other such applications requiring higher magnification than ordinary binoculars. Another feature is the range finders that help you estimate the distance of the target during activities like shooting, golfing, photography, etc.
While binoculars can offer you a clear vision of distant objects, spotting scopes are your ideal choice if you need 20× to 60× magnification. As such, a spotting scope is your perfect tool for the following applications:

●Digi scoping
●Astronomy
●Long-distance bird watching
●Surveillance of properties and people
●Photography
●Golfing
●Target shooting
●Hunting
●Nature study
●Wildlife viewing
●Night vision

Also known as field scopes or digiscopes, spotting scopes come in various sizes, configurations, and choices to suit different budgets. The diameter of the objective lens determines the light-gathering power and resolution of a spotting scope, typically between 50 and 80 mm (2.0 and 3.1 in). So, the larger the objective, the mightier and more expensive the spotting scope.

Structure of a Spotting Scope

A spotting scope consists of an optical assembly with a small refracting objective lens, an internal image-erecting system, and a removable eyepiece. The image-erecting system uses relay lenses, prisms such as Porro or roof prisms, or a catadioptric system of the Schmidt or Maksutov design. These devices usually sport a ruggedised design with a mounting interface for the tripod and an ergonomically designed, well-placed control knob for focus adjustment. Certain spotting scopes also have in-built reticules or graticules for stadiametric range finding.

The eyepieces of spotting scopes are generally interchangeable, and this helps them to adapt to different magnifications. They are also likely to have a variable zoom to give a wide range of high magnifications. In the case of spotting scopes, magnifications less than 20× are unusual. Likewise, magnifications of more than 60× are also rare as they might lead to poorer image brightness, a narrow field of view and shaky imaging even on a tripod.

The high magnification makes spotting scopes prone to image distortions due to vibrations. Hence, it is recommended that you use the scope with tripods or monopods that offer a steady and stationary platform that provides better image stability. Furthermore, the tripod heads are useful to control any required scope movements.

The eyepiece mount layout is usually “straight-through” (on the same axis as the scope body) or “angled” (at an angle to the scope body—usually 45 degrees).
